Chevy remote car keys, also known as key fobs, smart keys or push to start keys, are the latest generation of security car keys. GM, and Chevrolet models, of course, included, is the only manufacturer that allows self-programming for remote key fobs. Professional locksmiths call this process: “on board programming”.
Just thought I'd post this as many ask. How much does it cost to have the key fob programmed?
The used 2014 (rollover '13 model) I bought from the non-GM dealer didn't have the spare set of keys. The dealer promised to provide a set. They came thru but I had to go through the process. I'll explain it. They gave me a new GM blank key & Fob aka Transmitter. They paid to have the key cut & fob programmed. One dealer near me wanted $35 to cut a key and program the fob. The one near the dealer charged $42 even though my dealer bought them from them. The parts dept cuts the key and the service dept programs the fob. Programming the key is easy and either can do it as well as the user. If you buy just a key, they don't charge extra to cut it and it costs $35-50. If you buy the Fob, programming doesn't come with it so it doesn't matter if you buy one from GM or off the internet, they charge $35-42. A GM fob lists for $140 (may be what a dealer would charge) and can be bought for $90 at on-line GM parts stores. Programming the fobs can only be done by a dealer or locksmith. I discuss that later. You need to bring with any keys or fobs you have as programming the fob wipes out the programming for all keys & fobs as you may be having it done because you lost your keys or they were stolen thus making the lost ones unusable by someone else. The repair order description was 'cut and program customer supplied key & transmitter' even though both were bought from them the week earlier. The instructions for programming the fobs posted on the internet from companies that sell fobs say 2012 and later Impalas need to be done at a dealership or locksmith. There's plenty of discussions where 2011 & earlier are user programmable via the dash gauges. The service writer told me he doesn't remember any Impala's being user programmable, only a couple truck or suv models. I downloaded user manuals for 2010, 2011, 2012 and each say it's only programmable via a dealer. Someone that has pre-2012 Impala and has the option on the dash gauge could comment otherwise. Maybe the option is there but the manuals don't make mention of it. The prev 2012 and current 2014 I have doesn't have the option. To program the key, you simply insert your known working key, turn on the ignition and wait til the lock symbol disappears. Remove the key and within 30 sec, put in the new key, turn on the ignition and you're done. Don't need to actually start the car. Hope this answers anyone's questions. Comments are closed.
